Our Persephone pendant is taken from a piece of history that's filled with meaning. The piece is a reminder of the bond between mothers and daughters, harvests and gardens, winter and spring fertility. Wear this medallion as a symbol of fertility and wealth. According to Greek mythology, Persephone, the Greek goddess of Springs Bounty was kidnapped and carried off by Hades, the god of the underworld. Persephone's mother Demeter, the goddess of the Earth, Agriculture, Harvest, and Forests was furious and caused all earthly things to die, including the mortals that worshipped the gods. Without the mortals, the gods would have no one to worship them or bring offerings to them. Zeus could not put up with the dying Earth and forced Hades to return Persephone. Before Persephone was released, she had eaten a number of pomegranate seeds. Because she had eaten the food of the dead, Persephone had to return to Hades and the underworld for four months every year. The rest of the year she was allowed to spend on Earth with her mother.

Although Persephone grew to love Hades, who treated her with compassion & loved his Queen, she always returned to her mother every spring, and hence in the winter when Persephone returns to the underworld, Demeter weeps and brings winter upon the land. And when she returns, Demeter rejoices and spring arrives. This medallion features a portrait of Persephone based on an ancient statue of her at the Archaeological Museum in Herakleion, Crete.
